Gerald Herbst ‘Jerry’, age 85, of Paterson, NY, died Monday, April 11, 2016 at Putnam Hospital Center with his family by his side.

Mr. Herbst was born on February 20, 1931 son of the late Simon and Esther (Cohen) Herbst. He honorably served in the US Coast Guard during the Korean War.

On April 3, 1971 he married Mary Barrett in Valhalla, NY. Together they moved to Patterson, NY 43 years ago.

Jerry was a man of many trades, he was a teacher of Industrial Arts at Cedar Knolls for 30 years, a member of the Town Council and Zoning Board of Patterson for 29 years, a realtor for 3 years, an educator with Queens Beauty Institute and a shop owner early in life.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 45 years; his 2 daughters; Julie Trainor of Middleton, NY and Mindy (Michael) Brock of Pine Bush, NY, his 3 grandchildren; Iana Boyd (Scott), Alyssa (Shaun Schaller) and David Brock and 1 great granddaughter Devin Brock with one on the way, several nieces and nephews and his brothers-in-law; Thomas Barrett (Arleen), John Barrett (Emily) and Charles Barrett (Mary). He was predeceased by his sister Barbara Conn and his brother Henry Herbst. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him especially his two dogs, Skeeder and Suzee.

A Service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 3:30pm at Dwyer Funeral Home, Patterson, NY. Interment will follow at Maple Avenue Cemetery, Patterson, NY. Friends may call at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Patterson, on Friday from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.
