Vincent Clark Murphy, of Patterson, NY and Sherman, CT, passed away January 31, 2017 at Regional Hospice Care, Danbury, CT surrounded by his family. Born November 22, 1930 in Hartford, CT, he was the son of James J and Lucy Jackman Murphy. A native of West Hartford, CT, he attended local parochial grammar schools, St. Thomas Seminary High School, and graduated from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, MD, in 1956, with degrees in Philosophy and theology. For the next fourteen years, he was engaged in all phases of parish ministry in addition to founding and directing a polyphonic male choir, Director of a Junior High School, weekly counseling at the Cheshire Reformatory in Cheshire, CT, and Special Parole Officer for the Juvenile Court in New Haven.
In 1969, and for the next 25 years, Vincent founded, organized and managed a printing company, Malachy Clark & Co. Inc., in White Plains, NY, and a publishing company, Collegium Book Publishers, also in White Plains, NY. Retiring in 1995, he assisted his son in his landscaping business Colonialtown Landscaping Company until his death.
For many years, he taught Marketing and Business Organization and Management as an Adjunct Professor at SUNY at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY.
In his earlier years, he was an amateur Boxing Champion having trained under the former Worlds Featherweight Champion Batt Battalino.
Vincent was well known in the community for his oratory. Many still recall his rousing speech in opposition to the County landfill proposed for Patterson, NY. Before a packed house in the Middle School auditorium, he recited, in the original Italian, the “inscription over the door to hell” from Dante’s Inferno. He ended his speech and pointing to the County Executive and the Legislators seated on the stage he translated the last line “given up, you’re all going to hell.”
Vincent leaves his wife Nancy, his two sons, Vincent and his wife Rachael of Patterson, NY, Patrick and his wife Brenda of Conway, NH, his step sons Christopher Kozak and his wife Mary of Middlesex, NJ, and Jonathan Kozak and his wife Deborah of Cortlandt Manor, NY,; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. He also leaves his sister Sheila Gilbert of North Falmouth, MA and his brother Stephen Murphy of West Hartford, CT. He was predeceased by his sister Sr. Mary Ellen Murphy RSM, his brother Reverend Arthur Murphy and his sister Anne Melly.
He has been active in the community, serving many years in the White Plains Lions Club as a Director, as President of the White Plains Interservice Club Committee, as President of the Patterson Chamber of Commerce; as Corporate Secretary of the Putnam County Industrial Development Agency and a Corporate Treasurer of Putnam Community Foundation.
Funeral services are being arranged by the Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Patterson, NY. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 4pm-8pm at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Sherman, CT on Friday at 10:00AM. Burial will be in the family plot in Mt.
